Try Tactara early
Tactara is in its open test phase (the technical term is "beta" — that is what Google Play and TestFlight call it): the app already works, but it is still improving. You try it for free and tell it whether the dance is right — exactly that is what makes the recognition better. After the closed phase since spring 2026, anyone can now join — dance teachers in class, studio DJs at the social, ambitious dancers on unfamiliar floors or in dance bars. All you need is an iOS or Android device.
Who can join
Tactara runs on iOS and Android. Android via the open test on the Play Store, iOS via TestFlight.
How to install Tactara
Android (Google Play)
The test phase is open: anyone can join, no waiting list and no approval from us. You install the test version straight from the Play Store, and updates arrive automatically after that. Best done directly on your Android phone, with the Google account that is signed into the Play Store there.
Already tried Tactara — via direct download (APK) or from the Play Store? On Android this is a separate app: uninstall the old one once, then install again above. The dance feedback you already sent is safe (it lives on the server, not on the phone) — locally the app starts fresh.
Apple (TestFlight)
iOS runs via Apple TestFlight — new builds arrive automatically.
- Install TestFlight from the App Store (if you don't have it yet).
- Join the Tactara test via the link (TestFlight calls it a "beta").
- Install — new builds then land in TestFlight automatically.
App installed? Here is how to test
- Keep the app on while dancing or listening to music — it live-estimates the dance.
- Dance correct? Tap “Correct ✓”. Wrong? Correct it in a moment.
- Send it as dance feedback — every response makes the estimate better.
What to report
If the app gets the dance wrong or something glitches, please report:
- Track title and artist
- Which dance was actually playing (per WDSF/experience)
- What the app suggested — the top dance, plus the displayed tempo number if handy
- Stability status (green / yellow / red dot)
Please email beta@tactara.dance — a screenshot helps.
Dance feedback from the app
The test app has voluntary dance feedback: only when you explicitly trigger it does it send data-minimising measurements (never audio, no device or personal identifiers) to our server. We welcome confirmations and corrections for every dance in the tempo table — a correction means: when Tactara estimates wrong, you set the right dance directly in the app. Both sharpen the eight V1.0 dances and help most with the ones Tactara does not suggest yet.
What works, what does not
Tactara estimates live, from the room sound, which ballroom or social dance is playing — Standard, Latin, social — and shows the most likely ones first. It measures tempo to do that and shows it as a sanity number, but the result is the dance, not the number. No Shazam: no audio fingerprint, no song catalogue, everything runs locally on the device. And it estimates, it doesn't decide: where several dances share the same tempo, the choice stays ambiguous — the status dot (yellow/red) shows that openly instead of faking a certainty that isn't there.
How Tactara handles your data (app and test phase) is covered in the privacy policy.
